In Middle Welsh it became Gwogon and Gwogan and was adopted as a surname by a south Pembrokeshire Anglo-Norman family in the normanized or Anglicized pronunciation Wogan. Compare Cadogan. In Ireland the name has been Gaelicized as Úgán.
