Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 倪 meaning ‘boundary’ or ‘infants’ in ancient Chinese: adopted in order to escape from a feud in place of the Chinese surname 郳 which is also pronounced Ni. The original surname was from Ni (郳) the name of an ancient state also called Little Zhu (located in Shandong province) granted to the son of Duke Wu of Zhu (ruler of the state of Zhu died 796 BC ). After it was annexed by the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period (770–476 BC ) the name of the state was adopted as a surname.
