Horridge Vad efternamn betyder
see Horwich. from Horwich End in Fernilee (Derbys) which is recorded as Horwyck and Hor(e)wich(e) in 1285 and Horridge in 1640. The place-name derives from Old English hār ‘grey stone’ also ‘boundary’ + wice ‘wych elm’. perhaps in rare cases from any of the six places in Devon named Horridge but evidence that this surname survived into modern times has not been found except perhaps in the altered form Orange; compare Johan Orange 1541 in IGI (Knowstone Devon). The place-names derive variously from Old English horu ‘dirt filth’ hol ‘hole hollow’ and hār ‘grey stone’ (also ‘boundary’) all with Old English hrycg ‘ridge’ as the final element.
