Cuckney Vad efternamn betyder
in S England a variant of Cookney. in N England perhaps from Cuckney (Notts). The place-name is recorded as Cokeneye in 1211 and derives from an Old English personal name *Cuca (genitive *Cucan) + Old English ēg ‘island’. However in spite of the 1802 bearer listed below (in Cuckney itself) it is not certain that the medieval family name from this place survived into the modern period.Later spellings with Cock- may be variants of Cockayne as is explicit in Anne Cockayne or Cockanie 1618 in PROB 11 (Harthill Derbys). The 1802 example may also be this name altered to Cuckney by assocation with the place-name.
