English (northern): occupational name from Anglo-Norman French cornier ‘hornblower’ (Old French corneor). Alternatively a variant of Crowner a topographic name for someone who lived on a corner (from Middle English corner ‘angle corner; place where two streets meet’) or in Lancashire a variant of Corney. This name was taken to Ireland whence it later migrated back across the water to the industrial towns of Scotland and England. Americanized form of German Körner (see Koerner) or Swiss German Korner.
