Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 叢: (i) from the personal name of Cong Zhi (叢枝) said to be head of an ancient state called Zhi which was annexed by the legendary Emperor Yao (c. 24th century BC ). (ii) from the placename Cong Jia Yan (叢家硯) (located in present-day Wendeng in Shandong province) where descendants of Jin Midi (金日磾) (134–86 BC ) lived. Jin Midi was a prince of the King Xiutu of the Huns. He once made a gold statue for the worship of Heaven and for this reason was given the surname Jin 金 (meaning ‘gold’) by the Emperor Wu of Han (156–87 BC ). Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 從 meaning ‘follow’ in Chinese: (i) simplified form of Cong (樅) the name of an ancient state (located in Anhui province) granted to the youngest son of King Ping of Zhou (died 720 BC ).
