‘son of someone surnamed Clapham’. This type of name composed of a surname + son is mostly confined to northern counties especially Lancs and adjacent parts of WR Yorks. Clapham is especially frequent in WR Yorks and derives from Clapham (spelled Claypham 1421 in Place-Names of WR Yorks VI p. 232) near the border with Lancs. The village is five miles west of Giggleswick where Claphamson had already proliferated by the mid-16th century. Pronunciation of Claphamson is frequently weakened to Clappinson Clappison and Clapson. Bearers of the name apparently migrated to Lancs ER Yorks Lincs Northants London and possibly Kent.
