synonymous with Middle English atte Trewen denoting someone who lived ‘at the trees’ perhaps with reference to one of the Devon hamlets so named such as Trewyn Train or Traine; see Treen. John Treneman 1525 in Subsidy Rolls (Plympton St Maurice borough Devon) may be a descendant of Walter atte Treawen 1332 in Subsidy Rolls (Plympton Devon).
