Alternatively perhaps a nickname for a cattle drover or a herder derived from Slovenian pojati ‘to hurry to chase’ in the sense ‘to take cattle to pasture’. Compare Poye. This is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar) and may alternatively be of Slovenian origin (see 1 above). German: variant of Boje itself a variant of Boye.
