apparently from either Frognal in Teynham (Kent) which is recorded as Frogenham [sic] in 1254 or Frognall in Wickhambreaux (also Kent) recorded as Frogenhole in 1360. If so the development involves devoicing of -g- to -k- (for which there is some evidence in the medieval forms) and later metathesis of -ro- to -or-. Both place-names mean ‘frogs' nook’ from Old English frogga ‘frog’ (genitive plural froggena) + halh ‘nook corner’.
