from Farnborough (Berks) which is recorded as Fermeberge in 1086 and Ferneberga in 1167 Farnborough (Hants) recorded as Ferneberga in 1086 and Farenberwe in 1259 and Farnborough (Warwicks) recorded as Ferneberge in 1086 and Farneberue in 1236 and possibly also from Farnborough (Kent) recorded as Ferenberga in 1180 and Farnberg' in 1226 and Farmborough (Somerset) recorded as Ferenberge in 1086 though no compelling medieval evidence that these last two places gave rise to surnames has come to light. The place-names all derive from Old English fearn ‘fern bracken’ + beorg ‘hill mound’.
