from Framilode in Saul (Gloucs) which is recorded as Framilade in 1086 Fromilode in 1236 and Framlode in 142 The place-name means ‘crossing over or near the River Frome’ deriving from Old English ge-lād ‘difficult river-crossing’ qualified by the river-name Frome. Frome which is recorded as aqua de Frome in 1248 is a Celtic river-name (see Froom). The crossing itself near to the point where the Frome joins the Severn may have been across either river.
