About the U.S., Carded Birth Records in Military Hospitals, 1884-1912

General collection information

This database contains birth records for individuals who were born in military hospitals between 1884 and 1912 and who were dependents of military personnel. The records are "carded," meaning that the information collected was logged on standardized cards.

These records are a great source of genealogical data and family military history.

Using this collection

Records in this collection will typically include the following information:

  • Birth date
  • Birthplace
  • Mother's maiden name
  • Father's name
  • Father's military rank
  • Father's military regiment
  • Number of children the father and mother had together
  • Individuals with birth records in this collection may also have birth certificates. These may be available through the Department of State or the vital records office that the military hospital was located in.

    History of the collection

These records were created and collected by the Adjutant General's Office. Also known as the AGO, it was established as part of the War Department in 1821 to handle recordkeeping and correspondence for the U.S. Army.

During the time period this database covers, the U.S. military was continuously engaged in military action against Indigenous Peoples defending their lands in the American West and beyond. These include the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890 and the overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani of the kingdom of Hawaii. Births that took place at the time of the Spanish-American War in 1898, the Philippine-American War from 1899 to 1902, and the U.S. occupation of Nicaragua in 1912 are also in this collection.
