General Collection Information
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) estimates there are 82,000 American military and civilian personnel missing in action from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War. The majority of the missing died in World War II.
The DPAA’s mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing personnel to their families and the nation.
This collection contains information for the 44,000 missing service members whose remains are considered unrecoverable. More than 41,000 of the missing are presumed lost at sea from ship losses or known aircraft water losses.

History of the Collection
The Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency was established in January 2015 with the merger of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office and the Life Sciences Equipment Laboratory.
