Eugene S. Neal, 87, of Chestnut Street, Carlisle, husband of Dorothy Rowe Neal, died Friday, August 23, 2002, at Nicholas County Hospital. He was born June 20, 1915, in Nicholas County to the late R. W. & Sheila Vice Neal.
He was a 1934 graduate of Carlisle High School.
He was the proprietor of Neal’s Square Deal, which he, along with his father and brother, organized in 1932 and operated until his death.
He was a charter member and former director of Kentucky Food Stores.
He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant with the First Fighter Squadron in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of Carlisle Christian Church and a member of the church board.
He was a member and treasurer of the Nicholas County Historical Society and was made a Lifetime Director.
He was a former Carlisle city councilman.
Other survivors are: five nieces - Susan Neal Beymer of Lawrenceburg, Marilyn Booth (& Franklin) Hughes and Carol Ann Power of Carlisle, Nancye Boothe (& Marty) McClanahan of Butler, and Ann Boothe (& Matt) Fogler, Fullerton, California; five great nephews - Miles, Matt & Mark Hughes and Mike Power of Carlisle and Weston Worthington, Maysville; two great nieces - Laura Harris of Glasgow and Julie Worthington, Tampa, Florida; and several great great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Powell Neal and two sisters, Evelyn Neal Boothe and Colleen Neal Power.
Services were conducted Tuesday, August 27, at Carlisle Christian Church by Rev. Paul Neal and Rev. Steve Smith. Burial followed in Carlisle Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Miles, Matt, Mark & Jeremy Hughes, Jason & Neal Metcalfe, Mike Power, Benny Rowe and Wes Worthington.
Honorary bearers are members of the extended family.
Contributions are suggested to Carlisle Christian Church or the Nicholas County Historical Society.
Arrangements were by Mathers-Gaunce Funeral Home, Carlisle.
